So you’d like to host a clinic? Hosting a clinic is not a hard job. There are only a few things that are required. First, you need access to an arena. My favorite size for a clinic is 150 x 300. The arena can be smaller just keep in mind that at a school the students need room to apply new ideas. Good ground and the ability to water and work up the ground makes for a nicer and more enjoyable experience.

You need cattle. When picking your steers for a clinic you want an even herd. Make sure your pen of steers is neither all fast nor slow. Keeping your cattle well balanced allows for both headers and heelers to have a good opportunity to learn and improve.

Have some help pre-arranged to work the chutes. This allows for a more fluid running clinic where the students get to stay focused on their task.

You will need two to three heading dummies and two to three heeling dummies for the groundwork portion of the school.

Depending on your location you may need to accommodate the student’s horses with overnight stalling.

Lastly, have your students paid up prior to the start of the clinic. This is probably the hardest task of hosting a clinic. Requiring a deposit of half when your students sign up is a must! This protects you as the promoter and eases the financial strain on the students.
